CUDO U BEACONSFIELDU

.....Konacno vesela vjest, poslje tjedana ratnih izvjestaja i tumornih i sumornih Bushevih govora.

Kylie swoops on prime property

POP princess Kylie Minogue, 37, is building a hideaway paradise fit for royalty on French Island.

Amid rumours she may marry there, Kylie has dramatically expanded her secluded estate.
After buying a retreat 18 months ago, Kylie has snapped up 80ha of forests and rolling pastures only 400m away.

The latest purchase takes Kylie's island empire to 100ha, 50 times the size of the MCG oval and half the size of the Melbourne CBD.

The most private spot on the island -- accessible only by ferry -- the new property is surrounded by dense forest.

But behind the trees the plot opens into a vast open plain, with views across Western Port to the Mornington Peninsula, Melbourne and the Strezlecki Ranges. And beyond the plain is national park.

"There are few places in the world more private and peaceful -- and it is only 60km from Melbourne," a neighbour said.

No expense is being spared on transforming Kylie's other island property into a luxury escape.

In a nod to her expected husband-to-be, Olivier Martinez, the retreat has been given a distinctly French flavour.

Named Beauciel (French for beautiful sky), its address Ca 7, Rue Mont Wellington (the French version of its 7 Mt Wellington Rd address) is emblazoned on an elaborate stone-pillar gateway.

With strong rumours that Kylie could tie the knot there, a workman appeared to be preparing the home for visitors.

In February, a Melbourne wedding dress shop closed for a VIP customer, a week after Kylie was seen there.

Martinez's mother, Rosemarie, was then quoted as saying the couple would marry on the island during autumn.

PETROL PRICE A RECORD

PETROL rose to a record high $1.45 a litre across Melbourne yesterday following warnings that it will increase further — potentially boosting inflation and putting pressure on interest rates.

The price of fuel rose from an average of $1.31 cents overnight and climbed to $1.45 a litre as thousands of Melburnians scrambled to fill up.

RACV manager of government and corporate relations, David Cumming, said service stations in Melbourne usually put up their prices on Wednesdays under the normal price cycle. He warned motorists to fill up before prices went up further.

But while it seems motorists are likely to pay even more over the next week, federal Treasurer Peter Costello said relief could be on the way.

"Petrol prices were bad in April, shocking. What we're looking forward to is to see if there can be some relief in May and June," Mr Costello said.

"While inflation is expected to remain contained in the medium term, recent increases in oil prices, if maintained, may impact more significantly on inflation in the period ahead," he said, which would come into the calculation of interest rates. Prime Minister John Howard said the Federal Government was not making any extra money out of the high prices and has ruled out any cuts to the fuel excise.

"Petrol prices are painfully high, I acknowledge that … they are high because of the high level of crude oil prices," he said.

Speculation and heavy demand from Asia has seen the price of crude rise above $US70 ($A94) a barrel, Mr Cumming said.

He observed busy trade at several petrol stations yesterday as motorists filled up before further increases. He expects the price to fall slightly before the weekend.

Last week, The Age reported that $1.32 a litre seems to be the tipping point when commuters opt instead for public transport.

Public Transport Users Association spokesman Alex Makin said it was obvious that petrol prices would keep increasing — and repeated the call for better tram, train and bus services.

He said Melbourne's outer suburbs, which are heavily car reliant, would become "financially unviable" unless car dependence was reduced.
