MONUMENTS
Franciscan monastery, baroque.
In 1694, a timber Franciscan monastery was built to serve the needs
of communal monastic life. The foundations of the new monastery, built of stone,
out of the range of the of the fortress guns, were laid in 1727 by the
baron Trenk, commander of Brod. The west wing and the garden wall were finished
by the end of that year.
By 1732, the south wing was completed, followed by
the east wing (1768-1770). Above the monastery north passage a clock was sited,
which, together with the sundial, was made by A.Schotz.
The Franciscan friars of Brod were not only spiritual leaders but also
had a significant educational role. By opening a school in 1709, they
were the first educators, and, in 1720, they opened the Faculty of
Philosophy.
To this day the Franciscans have continued their work in the Sava
region round Brod, and the Franciscan monastery is one of the most
significant Baroque buildings in Slavonia, having the finest
monastery cloister in northern Croatia.
Fortress BROD, monument of category zero.
Brod was an important strategic and traffic centre, controlling the
crossing to Turkey and linking the main trade routes. Between 1715 and
1780, Austria built a great Imperial and Royal Slavonian border
fortress of Brod on the river Sava. The fortress was built by the
compulsory labour of the border paesants.
This fortress was of regular star-shaped plan,
dictated by the lowland locality,
and was built of compact soil, timber, bricks and partly of stone. To construct
the big fortress complex, designed to accommodate 4,000 soldiers and 150
guns, great woods in the vincinity were felled. This fortification, which covered
an area of over 141 acres, influenced the development of the settlement
(timber architecture, growth to the east) which had urbanistically been
defined in Turkish times.
In 1860, the fortress was abandoned as military
insignificant, but it was not until the beginning of the 20th century that
construction was permitted in the vincinity.
Being a unique and impressive example of 18th century military fortification
architecture, the Brod fortress has been declared a culture monument.
Gradual reconstruction of existing, partially destroyed areas and individual
structures of the great Baroque Brod Fortress with its original water channels,
is important part of the project of the future city centre of Slavonski Brod.

kulturnom i političkom životu Broda i Hrvatske: Ignjat Alojzije
Brlić, pisac i jezikoslovac, Andrija Torkvat Brlić, publicist i
političar, Fani Brlić, rođena Daubachy, slikarica, te
Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić, književnica.
Bogata knjižnica, jedna od najznačajnijih u Hrvatskoj u 19. st.
i arhiv s vrijednom prepiskom i izvornom građom - stoljetno
obiteljsko naslijeđe, danas je vrijedan dio nacionalne kulturne
baštine. Mi vam svakako preporučujemo obilazak Malog i Velikog
salona kuće Brlić, u kojima možete razgledavati stalne izložbe.
